I’m back for a Sunday Review!
Ever since Carly stopped her Marengo Subscription box I have felt a bit lost. I loved looking forward to a new box each quarter.
In the spirit of subscription boxes I’m back to review the Forelock and Fringe January 2026 Box!
Forelock and Fringe is a UK based subscription that began back in 2018 and is created/run by Emma, a fellow equestrian. I jumped at the chance to try it back in March 2023 when Emma rolled out the service to the United States.

How Often Does this Subscription Last? Are you Locked In?
This website is fabulous in the options available. If you want a new box every month there is a monthly option. You can cancel any time. If monthly is too much you can choose to get one bi-monthly. Every other month you’ll look forward to a box of surprises. You can also choose a one off box if you’re not sure or don’t want to commit to having the boxes automatically billed. Each of these three options are the same price…$63.
One other option is a 6 month recurring contract. If you can commit to 6 months you will receive a box each month and the cost is only $59. The contract auto-renews after the 6 months.
Following the recurrence questions the site will ask you a series of questions about yourself and your horse. It will ask about your color preferences, clothing sizes, dietary needs, tack colors, horse size, and riding discipline. I love the attention to detail! For example I am asked my upper body, lower body, shoe size, and glove size. It asks me to select up to 3 preferred colors…and a color to avoid.
Once you have made your selections you can optionally choose additional items to purchase at a discount. Sometimes there are past boxes available at a considerable discount!
Unfortunately, since this comes from the UK, the shipping fees do exist. For me the box costs $22 just to ship.
I paid my shipping and ordered my January 2026 box. I couldn’t commit so I opted with the one-off box. Ready to look inside?

First item in my January 2026 Forelock and Fringe box was a pole work activity card. It gives you how to set up the exercise and how to ride it. On the reverse side of the card are further instructions.
Inside the tissue paper, I discovered a navy pair of waterproof gloves by Equest. These gloves are made by eGlove. The website and branding claims these are riding gloves; I am not a glove wearing person on an average day so they are a little bulky for me to want to RIDE with them. That said I have been using these regularly for chores and while I’m outside woodworking. I find them fabulously warm and exactly what I need. Warmth without too much bulk. They work with a touchscreen. They can grip well. So far I am impressed with these.
Find them here: eQUEST Waterproof Riding Gloves
Value: $43

The next item I found was a navy(ish?) blue tee shirt by Lauria Garrelli. This shirt is the Livigno Horse Head shirt.
I cannot hate a shirt more. I don’t intend to be rude nor do I intend to be negative but I need to be honest and this is a terribly made shirt. It’s too short in the torso and too baggy in the back. It’s overall design is poorly considered and ill-fitted. This will find a new owner immediately.

Value: $32.99

Moving on from the rider gear I found some horse-centric items. I found this Seven Day Mud Away bottle and sprayer by Nettex.
According to the manufacturer this is made with “A Pharmaceutical grade oil and light fragrance.”
The claim for this product is to prevent the buildup of mud on all areas of the horse to make grooming easier. According to the label and name of the product one application of this product will last a whole week. I am underwhelmed by the ingredient list and yet very intrigued on if this can actually work.
I received a 250mL bottle which I cannot find on retail sites. The 500mL bottle is valued at approximately $16.17.

Value: About $8.00

Forlock and Fringe also often adds snacks…one for the horse and one for the rider.
For the horse, I received a small bag of Beetroot Bites by Lincoln. These bright red treats are shaped as pellets and make a great training treat.
I took Stanley over to our indoor arena and worked with him at liberty. He enjoyed these as a reward.
I could not find this bag in retail so my assumption is these are “free sample” pouches. You can, however purchase the Vegi-Bites from the same company. A full kilo bag costs about $10.78.
Lincoln Horse Care – Lincoln Vegi-Bites
Value: Free Sample? Maybe $3-4?

Lastly, I found the rider snack. The item in this month’s box was Original Scottish Fudge by Mrs. Tilly’s. At first glance they reminded me of the peanut butter fudge my grandmother used to make.
These are amazing! They are small in size so you can have one and share without feeling too guilty.
Value: $4.17

Remember when I mentioned you can choose certain add-ons to your box? I chose to add another package of horse treats. These are Maxima Mix n Munch Peach flavored treats for horses. These treats are 100% natural and contain no molasses, soya, or palm oil. There are no artificial colors.
I have not yet given these but I can imagine they boys are going to love them!
Products – Maxima Mix ‘n’ Munch
Value: $2.68

Is it worth it?
- Waterproof Gloves: $43
- T-Shirt: $33
- Seven Day Mud Away: $8
- Beetroot Bites: $4
- Mrs. Tilly’s Fudge: $4
- TOTAL VALUE: About $92
- Plus add-on Treats: $2.56
- TOTAL PAID AFTER SHIPPING: $88.96
I love the gloves in this box the most. They are like a warm soft hug. I wouldn’t ride in them (maybe trail ride but I don’t do that in winter) but they are fabulous for chores and basic tasks. It has been literal YEARS since I found a glove I am willing and happy to use so my praise should mean a lot…most of the time I would rather suffer with pain in my icy cold hands.
I am seriously unhappy with the tee shirt I received. I believe mass produced shirts like Gildan and Fruit of the Loom fit better and I do not believe it is truly worth the $33. I am probably going to get some pushback to this…so keep in mind this is MY OWN experience. I am seeing a lot of people who are indeed happy with their shirts.
The Seven Day Mud Away is a smaller version that what is available in retail. It fits in the box better and I’m excited to try it though!
The horse treats seem to be a “free sample” rather than a box item.
The fudge was delicious!
I am having trouble saying that this box was “Excellent Value” for the money I paid for it. I would say as a US (NY) based consumer it is fairly priced.
If your shipping charges are cheaper, it is WELL WORTH the purchase.
That said …. this box contains small batch items from small businesses. I LOVE this element. Heart to Horse Box…although it is US Based unfortunately came with many items that were mass produced and cheaply made. I would rather my money go to the small businesses.
This box is the closest thing to Marengo that I have found to date (I miss you, Carly!).
Keep in mind that this is simply one box out of many monthly boxes. Perhaps you like the t-shirt. Other rider items may be of better value. Some boxes feature more horse-centric items.
*In my previous box I received a polo shirt from Shires/Aubrion. I admit I haven’t worn that either but it is in my dresser and I do love it; someday I will wear it.*

Final Thoughts
This article is meant to be an HONEST review and unboxing, and I hope that I delivered that. I purchased this box with no discounts and gave my honest opinion.
The value of the box was slightly more than what I paid for it. The shipping fees really hurt my full enjoyment. If not for the fees, I’d be singing from the rooftops, but shipping is expensive and that’s the reality of it.
I have always wanted to be on the other side of these subscription boxes; curating, packing, etc. Having a US Based operation of this quality would be phenomenal. That said doing such is NOT an easy task and I give a ton of credit to the Forelock and Fringe for pulling it off and being successful for so many years AND expanding to overseas! (Hey F&F, want to partner up?)
If you love to open a box of surprises each month, every other month, or on occasion, the Forelock and Fringe is a fantastic choice. The makers carefully select items for the horse, the rider, and include edible treats to boot. The items are small business, small batch and natural in most cases. You can also opt for specific dietary needs.
Forelock and Fringe is the most customizable box I have found to date. You get to add details about color preference and sizes. You can add which riding style you prefer. They take all of these into special consideration.
The Forelock and Fringe subscription box makes a great gift. You are not required to put in all of the sizes…they are all optional.
Despite my displeasure with the shirt…I will definitely purchase another box at some point. It makes a fun treat and for me the occasional option works best since my main goal this year is to DOWNSIZE the clutter.
