Each May Trafalgar Square Books celebrates “Buy a Horse Book Day” with a site-wide sale and celebration of horses and authors. It is a holiday for horse lovers of all walks of life…young or old, those who ride, and those who admire from a distance.

Last year we honored Marguerite Henry in the launch of her biography written by Lettie Teague (Read the review HERE).

Last Year’s Celebration: Buy a Horse Book Day!

This year the them of the day is “Buy a Book for the Good of the Horse.”

What does this quote mean for you?

Is it how to train better? How to be a better rider? How to be a better steward of our Wild horses? How to be a better caretaker?

Our horse world is expansive. And knowledge is power. The more knowledge we soak in the better horse PEOPLE we can become.

In my mind this theme is very open to interpretation, which makes it BEAUTIFUL. You have SO many options! And this year they are offering 30% site-wide ALL WEEKEND so please use this link and find yourself a book that calls out to you.

I am an affiliate with Trafalgar Square so using my link let’s them know I sent you…you’re supporting the author, the publisher, and even me! Most importantly you are supporting the horses. And for that I thank you.

Need some suggestions?

Feel free to refer to my Book Club for some of the previous books I’ve reviewed. I’ve read a lot of really great ones and though I can’t list all of them here you can check out that book club for more.

Some books that come to mind if you need some ideas:

  • Starting in the Middle by Tik Maynard: Newly published this book review has not hit my book club review shelf just yet but I can very much assure you it is worth the read! I find myself taking pictures (my way of bookmarking) of every other page because of how insightful and brilliant Tik is. The book talks about Tik’s prep for Road to the Horse and all of his lessons with clinicians around the world. It’s insightful and thoughtful and embodies “For the Good of the Horse.”
  • No Bored Horses by Amanda Goble : This is another great read that hasn’t yet made it to my book club page, but the review is coming. I choose this for Buy a Horse Book Day because whether you have riding horses, driving horses, or retired pastured horses this can benefit them ALL. This book is excellent for giving you tips trick and DIY ideas to enrich your horse’s lives. This book is good for ALL domestic horses.
  • Jec Ballous’s Two Book Set: This set consists of 33 Strength and Fitness Workouts for Horses and 55 Corrective Exercises for Horses. These are excellent books for mounted or unmounted horses to help them become fitter and more balanced within their own bodies.

  • Wild Horses of Skydog by Clare Staples: This is a book that also deserves it’s spotlight for todays theme of Buy a Book for the Good of the Horse. In Wild Horses of Skydog you meet several groups of horses that call Skydog ranch their home. Clare is dedicated to keeping wild mustangs wild and to keep family units together as much as possible. This book not only tells their story and educates it’s reader but a portion of the sales directly go to supporting Skydog Ranch. This book is in more ways than one “good for the Horse.”

  • Horse Brain Human Brain by Dr. Janet Jones: This book is among my top favorite horse books and one that I think every serious horse person NEEDS to own, read, and reread periodically. It is a book packed with information so it is the type that needs to be reread in order to digest more knowledge each time. Dr. Jones explores the many ways horses work…how they see and experience the world. For someone to truly do “Good for the Horse” you need to understand the world from the horse’s perspective. If we all learn to consider that our training methods and horsemanship could drastically change. If we can be more empathetic to the horse we can do better for and by the horse.
