OVERVIEW:

I am a treat giver; I love spoiling my horses with new flavors and new things to make them happy.  Treats are great rewards for doing a good job, doing something I want them to do, stretching, or simply for existing and making me smile.

I have my preferred brands. I choose these brands based on the ingredient list, shape and size of the treat itself, size of the packaging, variety, price, and of course…how my horses respond.

Uckele is a brand that I’ve been a longtime fan of. Unfortunately, they sold their business to SmartPak but you can still get many Uckele products…just from SmartPak’s website instead (While I do like SmartPak I preferred going directly to Uckele for my large bulk items…what I buy from Uckele isn’t offered from SP).

One of the treats I have frequently purchased for my horses is Uckele’s Equi Treats! The latest bag I bought was Watermelon Basil flavor.

The treats come in 12oz and 4lb bags. I like having the option of a large bag because I often feed a handful when rewarding my boys. I also like having a jar on my stall front and in the barn at home so I can split the bag up between all four horses.

The Equi Treats are available in a variety of flavors including peppermint, apple pie, cherry vanilla, apple-banana, and watermelon basil. I have yet to meet a horse that doesn’t love these treats. The main ingredient of the treats in ground timothy grass followed by sunflower seed meal and salt. Each flavor has miniscule differences beyond that to establish the desired flavor. They are all below 10% non-structural carbohydrate (NSC) so they are an optimal choice even the IR/Cushing’s horses.

Inside the bag are small bite sized pellets, maybe 1/2″ in diameter and of varying length, but none longer than an inch. They are perfect for getting a horse to do it’s stretches without feeding him too many in one session. The size of the pellet makes for excellent training rewards as well. They are just large enough to reward your horse repeatedly in one training session.

I also believe the price point is perfect for the Equi Treats. The 12oz bag retails for under $10 and the 4lb bag retails for around $27. I treat regularly and find these last quite a while since you get so many treats in each bag.

PROS:

  • Cost Effective
  • Available in small and large bags
  • Small pellets allow you to stretch the longevity of one bag, make for perfect training rewards
  • Horses find the taste irresistable
  • There are 5 flavors to choose from
  • With NSC below 10% they make great treats for any horse

CONS

  • Being made of timothy they break apart very easily. The bottom of the bag might be full of crumbs (but you can still feed it, they don’t mind!)

Tips:

  •  Buy 1 of each flavor and enjoy a flavor tasting session with your horse!
  • Buy a big bag and store in a non-glass container near your horse’s stall/barn

Final Word:

Uckele’s Equi Treats can be purchased at SmartPak now. They have 5 flavors to choose from and 2 different sizes. They are one of my most preferred treats for my horses. They have a low ingredient list, are healthy and low in NSC, and the horses LOVE them. I love the large bag size and the small treat size. I find these treats ideal for training or for getting my boys to do their stretches.

I find the price to be about average when compared to similar products. Buying the 4lb bag is about $6.74/lb at the time I’m writing this…and $14.60/lb for the 12oz bag.

I HIGHLY recommend gifting these treats to your equine partner. They will go nuts for them!
