Let’s Talk About Unicorns!

Unicorn: noun: something that is highly desirable but difficult to find or obtain

Tomorrow is National Unicorn Day, so let’s have a little fun with it.

The horse world loves the term “unicorn.”

A unicorn has the look, temperament, training, and everything you want and love.

A unicorn checks all the boxes.

A unicorn is a special and rare gem that comes along and makes you feel like the luckiest person in the world.

A unicorn has the look, temperament, training, and everything you want and love.

Everyone has a different idea on what a unicorn is for them. The criteria for unicorn status is unique to every person.

Some time ago in 2019 after I brought home Tiger but before I lost Blade I made the comment of how lucky I was to have a heart horse AND a unicorn.

Blade was my forever heart horse. He had physical and (some) mental issues but he was my heart and soul. We were bonded and had a connection many people aren’t lucky enough to understand. His limitations didn’t exactly make him a unicorn because he really couldn’t do what I wanted but he was what my soul needed.

Tiger came along as the unicorn. Tall. Dark. Handsome. Easy to get along with. Affordable. Sound. GREAT mind. He checked ALL of the boxes plus some. I love him dearly but I’d be lying if I said we created the bond Blade and I had. We have a bond but it’s different and I’m sure it will evolve even more in time.

Now I also have Nahe. Am I dreaming? Are my standards set too low? Could I be so lucky? I loved Nahe the day I met him but in the last 16 months he’s become a hybrid to me. While I still have my heart threads for Blade, Nahe has been patching some of the holes and weak spots. His companionship and personality are therapeutic and soul-healing. In a world full of so much hate and stress Nahe is a welcome oasis. He comforts me and has a way of knowing when I need some extra smoochies. Nahe checks all the boxes too. He’s tall, big bodied, handsome, sound, sane, surefooted. Are unicorn heart horses a thing?

One thing is certain. I have been blessed with some amazing creatures…unicorn…heart horses…and everything in between.

  1. My avatar is my unicorn! Mr Beau Windswept aka Beaux Beaux aka Fat Boi. He is now 19 and we’ve been together for 10 years. It took some time for both of us to find trust and to find out grove, but holy smokes it was worth the effort. Beaux has a huge personality, is sound, and keeps me on my toes. He isn’t easy but he has made me a better horseperson and rider. We’ve been on a hiatus with COVID, but he has loved his year of grazing with his chestnut girlfriends. We will start easing back into trails and I’m hoping to have a new cart this summer so we can enjoy driving again.
